Ömer Karadeniz, President of the Federation of Plastic Industrialists (PLASFED), stated that the Source Separation System (KAS) should be implemented as soon as possible for a sustainable world. Mentioning that the Deposit Return System (DİS) will start on January 1, 2025, and will be a gain for our country, Karadeniz said, “As the umbrella organization of the plastic sector, PLASFED, we certainly want and support the implementation of DİS. However, the indispensable element of this process is KAS.”
Emphasizing that materials used must be recycled to create economic value, PLASFED President Ömer Karadeniz noted that this can only be achieved through the Source Separation System (KAS).
Karadeniz stated that KAS has been implemented in developed countries for almost 40 years, and unfortunately, our country has not yet reached the desired level in this regard. He highlighted that for a sustainable world, it is crucial for waste to be separated at the source and recycled, reducing resource use in this way. He stated, “If we cannot implement the Source Separation System sufficiently, it will be impossible for us to reach a sufficient level in terms of sustainability and recycling technologies.”
Karadeniz remarked that KAS needs to be activated as soon as possible and stressed the importance of raising public awareness on this issue. He explained that as NGOs, they continuously inform their members about this matter, and he called for public support through spotlights. Pointing out that this cannot be achieved solely through local governments, Karadeniz stated that local governments and the central government must act together.
Karadeniz pointed out that in Europe, packaging waste has been separated at source for many years, providing both ecological integrity and economic value to the countries. He said, “The world is transitioning from a take-make-dispose approach to a circular economy model. This is not just a preference but a necessity. Since the world's resources are not limitless, society needs to undergo a paradigm shift towards circular economy and move away from the ‘throwaway’ mentality.”
DİS Starts on January 1
PLASFED President stated that the Deposit Return System (DİS) will commence on January 1, 2025, and will be a gain for our country. He said, “There is no developed country left that does not implement DİS in recycling technologies. As the umbrella organization of the plastic sector, PLASFED supports the implementation of DİS. However, the starting point for this is the indispensable KAS. Developed countries added value to their economies by implementing this 40 years ago. We also must join the system without delay. The path to this is through KAS, that is, the Source Separation System.”
