PLASFED President Ömer Karadeniz visited the ÇEVKO Foundation and emphasized the importance of the Source Separation System (KAS) in achieving sustainable environmental goals. He stated that the success of the Deposit Refund System (DIS) depends on the effective implementation of KAS, saying, "Developed countries added value to their economies by implementing this system 40 years ago. We must not waste time and join the system as soon as possible."
On April 25, 2025, PLASFED Board Chairman Ömer Karadeniz was a guest at the Çevre Koruma ve Ambalaj Atıklarını Değerlendirme Vakfı (ÇEVKO). During the meeting, he met with ÇEVKO Board Chairman Okyar Yayalar, Secretary General Mete İmer, and Director of Public, International Relations, and Projects Alphan Eroztürk to discuss current issues.
Karadeniz pointed out that environmental issues have become one of the biggest challenges in today's world, emphasizing that increasing population, industrialization, and consumption habits lead to the depletion of natural resources and environmental pollution. He stressed that the solution to these problems lies in recycling and stated that the Source Separation System (KAS) is crucial for a sustainable future.
Stating that the plastic industry is one of the areas that contributes most to the environment, Karadeniz noted that plastic waste has significant economic value and should be reintegrated into the economy.
He highlighted that the Deposit Refund Systems (DIS) implemented in European countries and the commitments under producer responsibility have developed the circular economy. He mentioned that Turkey's zero waste project is a positive step, but emphasized the need to increase training in this area.
DIS starts by the end of the year
Karadeniz explained that steps to be taken towards recycling are critical for the plastic industry, stating, "Especially, the DIS application stands before us as a practice that can ensure the collection of waste with maximum efficiency. Countries that implement DIS can achieve success in a very short time. There isn't a developed country that hasn't implemented DIS in recycling technologies. As the founding organization of the plastic industry, PLASFED, we want and support the implementation of DIS. DIS will be implemented by December 2025. However, the indispensable prerequisite for this is the Source Separation System."
Recycling provides economic and environmental gains
President Karadeniz noted that recycling has become one of the most important agenda topics in recent years, saying:
"Recycling, which provides economic and environmental benefits, must be supported and its importance must be constantly emphasized on every platform. Citizens should be informed about recycling through legal regulations and public campaigns. In addition, written and visual media should also be involved to increase social awareness regarding the separation of waste."
